Fishing Vs. Golfing As A Winter Day Activity

Yes, for many people it would seem strange for a young husband to drive from Modesto to the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve, with wife seven and a half months along. Why might Scott Peterson have decided to go to the Marina rather than go golfing, if he was planning to choose between activities that day (as he later claimed)?

I've heard it said that on a chilly day it seems ridiculous to go out on the water rather than go golfing, so why would he do it (unless he needed to get rid of a body)?

At the Berkeley Marina, however, temperatures might well have been milder (warmer) that December 24th than they were inland. The climate information from around the web that I've re-posted below shows that the inland valley areas like Modesto are cooler in the winter than the coast.

________

California's climate varies widely, from arid to subarctic, depending on latitude, elevation, and proximity to the coast. Coastal and Southern parts of the state have a Mediterranean climate, with somewhat rainy winters and dry summers. The influence of the ocean generally moderates temperature extremes, creating warmer winters and substantially cooler summers, especially along the coastal areas.

December average high/low for San Francisco: 58/47

December average high/low for Fresno (Inland) 55/38

Here's a link to Sunset.com where California climate zones are discussed in detail.

Wikipedia says of Modesto:

Modesto usually has cool winters and very hot, dry summers. Average January temperatures range from 56°F (13°C) in the day to 40°F (4°C) at night.

Also from Wikipedia:

Rates of both violent crimes and property crimes are higher in Modesto than the state average.[9] Of particular note is that Modesto ranks among the top car theft cities in the US. As of 2008 Modesto ranked number 1 for car theft rate per 100,000 people.[10] Modesto is also home to many street gangs. The Stanislaus County Gang Intelligence Task Force estimates there to be 7,000 to 10,000 gang members.[11]

San Francisco's climate according to Wikipedia:

San Francisco's climate is characteristic of the cool-summer Mediterranean climate[64] of California’s coast, "generally characterized by moist mild winters and dry summers."[65] Since it is surrounded on three sides by water, San Francisco's weather is strongly influenced by the cool currents of the Pacific Ocean, which moderates temperature swings and produces a remarkably mild year-round climate with little seasonal temperature variation.

And:

The rainy period of November to April is slightly cooler, with high temperatures of 58–64 °F (14–18 °C) and lows of 46–51 °F (8–11 °C).

From City-data.com:

California has four main climatic regions. Mild summers and winters prevail in central coastal areas, where temperatures are more equable than virtually anywhere else in the US; in the area between San Francisco and Monterey, for example, the difference between average summer and winter temperatures is seldom more than 10°F (6°C). During the summer there are heavy fogs in San Francisco and all along the coast. Mountainous regions are characterized by milder summers and colder winters, with markedly low temperatures at high elevations. The Central Valley has hot summers and cool winters, while the Imperial Valley is marked by very hot, dry summers, with temperatures frequently exceeding 100°F (38°C).

From Garden.org:

This region has two distinct areas; those affected by the coastal fog, and the dry inland and mountain areas. The coast features cool days and nights with minor fluctuation in temperatures from winter to summer.

Summers are dry from March to November and may often have fogs keeping the temperatures cool, while winters feature rainstorms from November to March, and rarely receive a frost. Coastal mountain valleys are warmer and cooler than the coast, but still are moderated by fog in summer and warm coastal temperatures in winter. The coast and coastal mountain valleys receive 40 to 60 inches of rainfall on average a year. Their growing season ranges from mid February to late November, depending on your location.

Inland areas are drier (10 to 20 inches of average rainfall a year), hotter in summer, and colder in winter.
